The AVID Elective at DP consists of the following key factors:
It is a privilege to be an AVID student; students must apply to be in AVID and sign contracts to remain in the program. Students will generally take the AVID elective all four years if possible.
The main focus areas of the AVID Elective program are as follows:
AVID 9: We focus on academic organization and study skills. Students participate in biweekly formal tutorials.
AVID 10: The focus continues on study skills and academic success. Students begin to investigate colleges, and take day trips to colleges in the local area.
AVID 11: In the Junior year the focus is on academic support during what is typically the most difficult year of high school. We also provide SAT test prep, and all AVID students will take the SAT and ACT college admissions tests in the spring. Also, we traditionally take an overnight field trip to explore Southern California colleges. Only students previously enrolled in AVID 10 are eligible for AVID 11.
AVID 12: Seniors get personalized assistance in applying for colleges and, after admission, applying for financial aid and scholarships. We traditionally take an overnight field trip to explore Northern California colleges.
A highlight of the senior year is the AVID Senior Celebration, where all AVID seniors from area high schools are honored for their success.
Throughout all four years of the AVID program is integrated, personal counseling. Our AVID counselor stays in constant communication with students, parents, and AVID teachers to ensure student success and advancement. In addition, counselor facilitate recruitment and registration of prospective AVID students from our feeder junior highs as well as from within DP.
